Today show anchor Matt Lauer announced this morning that former Today show, and current CBS Evening News anchor, Katie Couric, will be back on the program tomorrow morning to make a, "major announcement."

"Permanently?" asked anchor Meredith Vieira. Lauer laughed: "No, you're not sick again tomorrow are you?"

Let the speculation begin.

shocked is katie leaving the Evening News? Or maybe she has written a tell all book too like Babs Walters...or she could be pregnanttongue

I think she would be wise to give up the CBS evening spot.  She should go home to NBC.

I would imagine she's leaving the evening news for something else.  Whether it's the Today show again remains to be seen, but from everything I've read, the ratings took a nosedive when she went to CBS.

Her perkiness is beyond irritating, so I don't watch her in anything.  She's just too...much.

CBS is forcing her out so her leaving the news is a given here.  Unlike many male anchors who are given years to gain a foothold, the 9 months or so they've given her is 9 months too long in the minds of TPTB at CBS news.  Perhaps she will join one of the NBC news magazines and feature her stories on the Today Show or become part of NBCs cable news network (i.e. MSNBC) and have a program of her own.  In any case, I wish her well.  She carried the Today Show and made it what is is now and those still employed there owe her a debt.

I agree.  Even though it is the Year 2008 the male dominance of the evening news is an interesting topic.  I think women are just as capable of delivering the news as men but this particular spot for Men Only seems to be some bizarre comfort zone for the population--women included.

Katie did put the Today Show up there in the ratings.  She had just the right personality for it.  I LOVED Meredith on The View but cannot stand her on the Today Show.  She seems very unsure of herself, obviously does not get along with Matt and comes off awkward.  She also looks messy.  Bad fit for this program.

I wish Katie would come back to Today but it probably will not happen!  JMO

I think it's a wise move for CBS to boot Katie.  When I first heard she was going to anchor the evening news there, I just rolled my eyes.  I'm not against a woman anchoring, it was simply a matter of Katie being... Katie.  She has always struck me as being a giggley lightweight who was in here element on the "Today" show, not as a serious news anchor.

I don't know if you remember this, beerbad, but back in the 60's, when Peter Jennings was put into the anchor chair waaaay before he was seasoned, he was yanked after a short time when tptb @ ABC realized he wasn't ready.  So they sent him overseas for reporting from 'Nam, where he cut his teeth.

So I think it works both ways, and simply depends on the individual.

Personally, I'd like to see Katie return to the "Today" show, and have Meredith return to the "View" in Barbara's chair.

ICAM! I felt the same way from the get-go. Couric set women in news back about a century, I think. CBS should have hired a legitimate news journalist -- like Diane Sawyer -- instead of a lightweight like Couric. I saw this ending coming from her first day on the job. I don't know what CBS was thinking.

Interesting, though, that Katie is making the announcement on an NBC show and not a CBS show....
